White Water Rafting : A Short Guide

June 20th, 2010 · No Comments

Going white water rafting does not mean that you have to spend a fortune traveling to the Himalayas or the Canadian Rockies. The chances are that you can find somewhere within just a few hours from where you live. Therefore, it something you can experience on a weekend trip away.

So, if you have a spare weekend, why not experience the thrills of white water rafting for yourself? It costs very little to book yourself on a white water rafting trip and do something different that takes you out of your comfort zone.

All the equipment you need is included in the cost and you are instructed by an experienced river guide who will make sure that you survive the experience in one piece. From as little as $60 per person, a group can take a half day rafting trip down a thrilling and scenic river. Other costs to consider are your transport to the venue, and any accommodation if you are staying overnight. When you arrive on location, you will be greeted by an instructor who will explain the basics of white water rafting. They will explain how to hold / use the paddle and what to do in the event that the raft capsizes. This introduction will last around 30 minutes, and you will have the opportunity to ask any questions that you may have. It is worth pointing out that although white water rafting can look kind of scary, you really have nothing to worry about. You will only be taken to areas that are known to be safe for rafting and your instructor will be with you in the raft to keep things under control. There are different speeds and difficulties of rapids, so whether you are feeling confident or not there will be something suitable for you. If you fancy trying out the faster rapids, then you do not even need to be a particularly ’sporty’ person. Strength is not a requisite skill to have; technique and confidence are much more important. Also, remember that because it is a group activity, if you make a mistake then there will be people on hand to help you out. So, do not let worries about your strength and ability stop you trying this exhilarating experience for yourself. Most white water rafting companies have websites, so it is not difficult for you to make a booking. Check out some websites, read some reviews about them and then make your choice. What are you waiting for?
