When this cute boy leapt to stardom in the ’80s, no one could have predicted that he would become one of the most revered thespians of his generation. A former rock-and-roll wannabe, Depp segued into acting with a handful of big-screen supporting roles. With his gorgeous cheekbones and pouty lips, he became an instant sex symbol on the TV series 21 Jump Street. After graduating from the small screen, Depp shrewdly eschewed the traditional leading-man route, playing offbeat characters in movies helmed by edgy directors: John Waters, Terry Gilliam, and his most frequent collaborator, Tim Burton. Off screen he cultivated a bad-boy copy with a string of high-profile romances (Winona Ryder, Sherilyn Fenn, Kate Moss) and trashed hotel rooms. But Depp developed both personally and professionally in the ’00s, earning Oscar nods and making a stable home with his girlfriend Vanessa Paradis and their children. In 2007, he proved that, regardless of his megastar status, his family was his top priority when he interrupted the shoot of Sweeney Todd to be by his sick daughter’s bedside.
Johnny Depp is one of my absolute favourite actors, due to his penchant for picking quirky roles over Hollywood leading man or action hero types. I usually take pleasure in watching his movies (with some exceptions), so I have decided to make a list of my five ten of his movies, here’s the list.
5th Place
Blow (2001)
This 2001 film stars Depp as George Jung, a small-time pot dealer who became the leading distributor of cocaine in the U.S. Depp is the best thing about this movie, playing George from his 20s to his 50s or 60s and delivering an excellent performance. The film is well-made but it’s hard to sympathize with a drug dealer who destroyed so many lives.
4th Place
Public Enemies (2009)
This is the story of the last few years of the notorious bank robber John Dillinger. He loved what he did and could imagine little else that would make him happier. Living openly in 1930s Chicago, he had the run of the city with little fear of reprisals from the authorities. It’s there that he meets Billie Frechette with whom he falls deeply in love. In parallel we meet Melvin Purvis, the FBI agent who would eventually track Dillinger down. The FBI was is in its early days and Director J. Edgar Hoover was keen to promote the clean cut image that so dominated the organization through his lifetime. Purvis realizes that if he is going to get Dillinger, he will have to use street tactics and imports appropriate men with police training. Dillinger is eventually betrayed by an acquaintance who tells the authorities just where to find him on a given night.
3th Place
Donnie Brasco (1997)
In the 1970s, FBI Agent Joe Pistone goes undercover and infiltrates the mob in New York City. Using the name Donnie Brasco, he befriends a ‘made’ mafioso Benjamin ‘Lefty’ Ruggiero. As time goes by, Pistone begins to identify and care for his mafia friends, especially Lefty. Pistone is married and has children but he is away for weeks or months at a time eventually leading to his wife asking for a divorce. When he stops reporting to the FBI daily as is required, his superiors decide the time has come to pull the plug on the operation. Based on a true story.
2th Place
Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003)
Pirates of the Caribbean is a sweeping action-adventure story set in an era when villainous pirates scavenged the Caribbean seas. This roller coaster tale teams a young man, Will Turner, with an unlikely ally in rogue pirate Jack Sparrow. Together, they must battle a band of the world’s most treacherous pirates, led by the cursed Captain Barbossa, in order to save Elizabeth, the love of Will’s life, as well as recover the lost treasure that Jack seeks. Against improbable odds, they race towards a climactic confrontation on the mysterious Isla de Muerta. Clashing their swords in fierce mortal combat, Will and Jack attempt to recapture The Black Pearl ship, save the British navy, and relinquish a fortune in forbidden treasure thereby lifting the curse of the Pirates of the Caribbean.
1th Place
Ed Wood (1994)
A biopic of the life and work of the legendary ‘worst director of all time’, Edward D. Wood Jr., concentrating on the best-known period of his life in the 1950s, when he made Glen or Glenda (1953), Bride of the Monster (1955) and Plan 9 from Outer Space (1959), and focusing on both his transvestism and his touching friendship with the once great but now ageing and unemployed horror star Bela Lugosi.
