I always run into people telling me how they always wished to learn to play the guitar. The guitar is the number 1 instrument of choice for beginning musicians (Piano is a close second). There’s nothing quite like the guitar. It sort of just sucks you right in and you can’t help but to enjoy it. There are a few mistakes people make at first though. Let’s take a look at them.

Not Committing To Taking Lessons

This is the most common mistake. Very often a person would get a free guitar from one of their relatives or friends. Then they’ll strum a couple of strings for a few days to see if any reasonable sound will come out. Very soon they find out just how difficult it really is, put their guitar under the bed and forget all about it. A few beginners might want to learn more, so they will pick up a guitar guide book and start learning. And even they give up as soon as they realize how difficult to get their fingers in proper position to play the chords.

Not Researching Their Options

This is the second most common mistake. These people just pick out the closest instructor to their home with the best price and start taking private guitar lessons. Now, I’m not saying it happens to everyone. Some get lucky and get a wonderful instructor. It happened to me. I ended up taking two year of lessons and my instructor got a job as a studio musician and quit. I decided not to give up and continued taking lessons from his replacement. Big mistake! He just bragged to everyone that he got a student and showing of in from of me what a great guitar player he was. It was terrible. I hope you won’t make the same mistake and make sure you get good references for your instructor.
