Celebrities have merged firmly into the lives of regular people. We watch their careers, relationships, sympathize with their losses and celebrate their success. Objectively they are perfect strangers to us, but notwithstanding this fact we can become quite attached to our favorite celebrities. That’s why if everything bad happens to them we feel bad. And if the worst happens our emotions can get burst out. We understand that sooner or later everybody dies, but death of our favorite celebrity can get us into great muddle.
Death is a very fascinating and mysterious fact of life. It lures people but at the same time it makes us want to run away from it. When a favorite celebrity dies people can ache no less than when they lose a person they personally knew. When people lose a family member or a friend there is much reminiscence. People think of words they should have said and things they should have done. As a rule people survive this either within their personal groups or with some additional professional help to get the feeling of closure and acceptance.
What about celebrities? They often become an inseparable part of our lives. Keeping track of their lives we feel like we personally know them. We watch them on TV, listen to their shows on radio, read columns in press, and follow them on Twitter and other social networks. The latter gives the most real feeling of directly communicating with a celebrity. As a result their thoughts, sayings become very important for us and we start treating our favorite celebrities almost like our distant family members.
Our favorite celebrities are idealized beings with fantastic lives. There is nothing trivial or monotonous about them. We perceive the events of their lives in isolation, without any context, thus when we hear that our favorite celebrity is dead we submerge into mourning. We fight shock and inability to accept the horrible fact. Sometimes when the most meaningful celebrities die the whole nation can bewail the death.
Celebrity death resonates with how we are used to perceive celebrity lives. Their lives are a perfect concentrate of positive events. We always think that nothing bad can happen to them. But it can. And we are often not ready to accept it. We are lost as we do not see any correspondence between what happened and what we imagined.
The death of Farrah Fawcett left millions of people in bewilderment. How could anything so horrible happen to such an angel? It was so different from what people used to associate her with: glamour, perfect body, great blond hair and fabulous life. Death contradicts all the above mentioned attributes. The only justification points are when celebrity dies after going through some illness or emotional hurt. Then it seems more consistent with the fact of death.
