3 Great Burgers To Try The Next Time You Visit To Chicago.

July 9th, 2010 · No Comments

Uncle Alton here. When I am not helping people find replacement parts for their BBQ Grills with sites like Sunbeam Grill Parts and Ducane Grill Parts, I like to travel and eat.

Preferably both at the same time. ;)

One of my favorite locations to do both is Chicago.

Here is a short report one some excellent grub I discovered on a recent trip.

Enjoy.

Chicago may be best know in the food world for deep dish pizza, loaded hot dogs and Charlie Trotter’s Steakhouse. But don’t miss out on these 3 hamburgers.

From a steakhouse wonder to an almost perfect char-burger from a famous hot dog stand, everyone will find something here to enjoy. Chances are good that you will enjoy all of them.

1. The Custom House Burger at (where else?) The Custom House

The Custom House is known for their steaks but you just take a seat at the bar and let the server bring you a cheeseburger. Don’t even consider anything else. Because this cheeseburger is steakhouse quality.

The cooks grind up top-of-the-line short rib meat and mix it with prime steak scraps. So you are getting the real deal here - even if it is on a bun. They top the juicy pattie with a generous aged cheddar cheese and serve it on a freshly made poppy-seed bun. A bit of sea salt and a tomato-based homemade sauce completes the perfection.

Enjoy.

The Custom House is at 500 S. Dearborn St. and the burger costs $12 (cheap!)

2. Angus Beef Burger at Naha

If you crave a real angus beef burger, skip the fast food pretenders and head over to Naha.

The moist, flavorful meat patty is topped with roasted tomatoes and white cheddar cheese and served on what might be the best stand in for a hamburger bun in America. The sea-salt crusted “bun” is made of focaccia dough and is toasted and super-dense.

But even this wonderful bun probably will not stop the juices of the burger from running down your arm - so take precautions and wear short sleeves.

Naha - 500 N. Clark St. Angus Beef Burger - $15

3. Double Cheddar Char Burger at Paradise Pup

This small hot dog stand was featured a couple of years ago on Diners, Drive-ins and Dives on the Food Network. You can enjoy looking at the snap shots on the wall while you wait in line. There is ALWAYS a line — even in the dead of winter.

But it is worth it.

Naturally, you will want to try the hot dogs they are famous for - but make sure you don’t miss out on the Double Cheddar Char Burger. The intense charred exterior of the patty covers some of the most tender, most flavorful beef you have ever tasted. Add the cheddar and the grilled onion for a taste of old Chicago on a bun and you have got it made.

Paradise Pup is in Des Plaines at 1724 S. River Road. The Double Cheddar Char Burger is $5.79
